Elton John, Eden Project 16.6.15
I'm not a huge fan of Elton John's music by any stretch of the imagination. It's not that I hate it or anything, it just isn't my bag. But when the opportunity came up to be a couple of yards away from him, in the photography pit, of course I jumped at it.
What transpired however, was either a higher management wish, or one of an artist with a lot of control that meant that the photography pit was a banned area, and all media accredited personnel would be led to a new photography area, right at the back, behind the crowd where you could pretty much write off any chance of getting a decent shot unless you had a 400mm plus lens.
I've spent a good few days being annoyed about this. Mainly because it meant that in terms of photographers, creativity and talent went out the window, and who had a bank balance big enough to purchase a huge lens spoke loudest. This shouldn't ever be the case (although I'm not naive enough to suggest that it never is).
So, what felt like a big break, actually turned into this negative experience and part of a huge learning curve. I'm just hoping that I'm able to photograph some other big gigs this summer because if this is the bookend of big summer photography gigs for me, then I'll be very disappointed.
