Olive Haigh Promotional Portraits, 12.3.17

I love photographing Olive because her music allows me to photograph her in a way you can't photograph a lot of bands.

Whenever I talk to bands, I try to tell that that it's only a good thing to spend more time on shots, creating as much of a mixture of styles as possible. This isn't just so a PR has more to work with (and ultimately use to sell the band) but also it's a creative outlet in which the band can say this is our collective personality, this is how our music sounds.

It has to be said though, that despite this, most bands hate being photographed. While photographer laziness is out there, it's bands either not knowing their image or not realising how important promotional things are that leads to that obvious casual shot against a grotty wall (which dont get me wrong, works brilliantly sometimes).

With Olive, I feel like she appreciates that everything from the art work on her releases to her promotional portraits is an extention of the music she makes. That music, to my ears, is soulful, earthly, natural, artistic, haunting, sensitive but also dramatic. I hope a sense of these things is portrayed throughout these photographs that we've both collaborated in order to create.
