Cornwall Concert Orchestra, Behind-the-Scenes Photography in Truro, Cornwall, UK, 20.1.20
Where were these photographs taken?
These photographs were taken in Truro School, Cornwall, UK.
Some words about the shots…
I was really lucky to be allowed to photograph the Cornwall Concert Orchestra as they rehearsed for a concert at the weekend.
While the room wasn’t particularly big for the near fifty members of the orchestra, they were accommodating enough and allowed me space to move around them and photograph them doing their thing.
While I used my 24-70mm lens to capture some wide shots (I did have my 14-24mm lens in my bag but the nature of the room made me feel like shooting that wide may have created messy shots), the majority of these shots were taken on a manual 135mm lens. Generally I wouldn’t use prime lenses but I quite enjoyed the challenge of using such an awkward focal length. It also meant that the subjects actually in the focus of the shots probably rarely knew that I was in fact photographing them (unless of course they have some lens knowledge) which in some respects added authenticity as people have an instinct to pose when they know a camera is trained onto them. It also meant that I had to be creative with my shots. I’m definitely a fan of framing my subject and there’s a whole bunch of photographing through music stands, gaps between peoples arms and bodies etc.
I’m hoping that in the future I can capture the orchestra performing, and preferably in a grandiose setting where I can bring out the wide angle lens as I feel like it may be quite a spectacle!
