Jazz Lounge: Mostly Girls, Live Music Photography at Old Bakery Studios, Truro Cornwall, 18.1.20
Where were these photographs taken?
These photographs were taken in Old Bakery Studios in Truro, Cornwall, UK.
Some words about the shots…
I’m eager this year to push my boundaries even further. I’ve been lumped in with photographing indie, punk and metal (not that that’s a bad thing!) and I just want to open myself up to photographing different styles of music and seeing if that changes how I photograph and if it will improve me as a photographer.
This gig was a tough one. The audience were sat down at tables, eating and generally being very quiet so I had very little scope in terms of photographing. I wasn’t really able to stand up apart from to the left and right of the stage without heavily conflicting upon the audiences enjoyment of the gig and I was extremely aware of that. Add to this that the lighting was poor (the drummer was pretty much in pitch black, and while two members were further back and in perfect lighting, another two members close to the stage were in poor pure blue lighting). All of these factors make for some pretty grainy but I’m hoping, interesting photographs.
Jazz is certainly a different beast. It’s a lot slower in terms of movement and to some extent you’re able to pick your moments and think about shots rather than working on instinct (I’m yet to figure out if that’s a positive or a negative!)
I’m hoping I can photograph a few more events like this and gain skill and experience throughout this year.
