Liam, Portraits in Cornwall, 3.6.19
Where were these photographs taken?
These photographs were taken in various place around Pool.
Some words about what I look for in a location…
I think there’s an idea that when you do photography, that the click of your camera is the most frequent task. In reality, when I’m not editing, or ‘hustling’ for opportunities, the majority of my time is spent doing two things…location scouting and watching/reading about photography techniques and ‘rules’ in order to improve.
When it comes to location scouting, I’m very much looking for shapes and symmetry. Often these are industrial and not particularly subtle. The majority of time when I approach a shoot, I have a location in mind but not at any point do I have an idea of how to pose a human being within that location, and even if I did test that out with a friend, everyone is different, so there’s no security in that.
I’ve definitely had band shoots in the past where the members of the band have joked about themselves not being needed in the shot, and while it’s funny, there is an element of truth in that, because if I’m shooting an industrial styled portrait, I often want the model to become the back drop to the image (even though I know that is the wrong way to approach portraits).
Some words about the model…
Liam is the bass player in a local band called The Rezner. He’s never had his photograph taken in this context (on his own and not a portrait within his band) so I think we can all agree that he definitely embraced it!
