Kyi, Portraits in Cornwall, 20.4.19

Where were these photographs taken?
These photographs were taken on an incredibly bright day but you wouldn’t know it because we photographed in Kyi’s home.

How were these photographs taken?
Despite it being a pretty lovely day outside when we were shooting, I probably broke every photography rule as we blacked out the room. We used a studio light that Kyi had in her home and I covered it with a red lace net that I had with me. I frequently used the red net (or coloured cellophane) to put infront of the lens to add extra coloured texture to shots. Alongside this I put clingfilm over my lens and applied Vaseline to the clingfilm (although not to the extent that I have been previously).

Although usually I’d moodboard shoots, I didn’t really on this occasion. We both knew that we were shooting indoors and that we were going to use flowers. Beyond that I had a couple of ideas for poses (that I didn’t really use) but I just let Kyi do her thing whilst experimenting with very minimal DIY lighting!

Some words about the model…
Kyi and I attempted to shoot together years ago and it just never happened but I’m secretly glad because I feel like I’m creatively at a level where I can produce work that at least gets close to matching her talent. This was our second shoot together but I feel very much like Kyi and I hit it off from the moment we started working together and I hope that you can tell through the images that working with Kyi is literally a dream. I work with a lot of people who haven’t modelled before (which sometimes is great and sometimes isn’t), so it’s really great working with someone who can pose themselves, takes direction really well and is generally really enthusiastic about the creativity of the shoots.

Not only is Kyi a model but she is also a musician. You can find out more about Kyi by clicking here.
